The justices have spoken unanimously; the ruling is in favor of the incumbent Chief Servant and Governor of Niger State, Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu. The tribunal's decision read by Justice Suleiman Kawu held that (1) the respondent, Dr. Aliyu, duly resigned his position as Permanent Secretary as per the electoral law, and (2) was duly elected having won the majority of lawful votes. The tribunal found that the petition of David Umaru, the All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP) candidate, challenging the April 14, 2007 election, lacked substantial evidence and was weak. Governor Aliyu can now focus on the continuing development of Niger State, so the long-suffering citizens can reap the dividends of democracy and economic development that Nigerlites have been deprived of by the immediate past administration. The Chief Servant's vision for Niger State is to make the government responsive to the people's problems. He looks to restore public confidence in state government by making government officials accountable and transparent in their actions. We call on all citizens to support the governor in his efforts to reposition the state to be among the three best economies in the country by the year 2020.
